Who is Eligible to Apply for Funza Lushaka Bursary?

The following must be read before making an application for a Funza Lushaka bursary for 2025

  • Should you have a criminal record, be charged with misconduct, or be dismissed from work, note that you are not eligible to apply for this bursary.
  • Allocation of Funza Lushaka bursaries to Higher Education Institution employees, their spouses, and their dependents/children is not permissible.
  • Non-disclosure of the information is required.
  • Applicants should be 30 years and below to qualify for the Funza Lushaka Bursary.
  • To qualify, you must complete the online application. No hard-copy applications will be accepted.
  • If you already have a teaching qualification, you do not qualify for Funza Lushaka Bursary.

Funza Lushaka Bursary Selection Criteria

The selection criteria are stipulated in the Funza Lushaka Policy. Here’s a summary:

  • The bursary is only awarded to South African citizens with a valid South African ID number.
  • Allocation of Funza Lushaka bursaries to Higher Education Institution employees, their spouse, and their dependents/children is not permissible.
  • Bursary applicants must already have been accepted into a either BEd or PGCE qualification at an accredited public University.
  • The applicant must also meet the national selection criteria for the Funza Lushaka bursary.
  • The bursary will only be awarded if two of the priority area subjects are included as a specialization in the teaching qualification.
  • The applicant should demonstrate good academic ability.
  • The applicant must show commitment to a teaching career, which includes: interest in working with young people; enthusiasm for a professional career in teaching; and readiness to face and surmount difficult challenges with integrity.

Funza Lushaka Bursary Funded Programmes

  • Two types of qualifications can be funded as shown below. The qualification must include subjects that will allow the student to specialize as a teacher in at least two priority subject areas.
  • Priority Subject Areas – are subjects that are identified by Provinces and National Departments of Education as subjects where teachers are required.

Undergraduate studies

  • 4-year Bachelor of Education degree (B.Ed.), specializing in one of the following Foundation Phase (Grade R – 3), Intermediate Phase (Grade 4 – 6), and Senior and Further Education and Training Teaching (Grade 7-12).

Graduate studies

  • One-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) for graduates whose degrees reflect two priority subjects where one module/course was successfully completed or studied at the third-year level while the second priority subject was successfully completed or studied at the second-year level.

N.B. Only the PGCE for the Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching  (SPFET) (Grade 7-12) will be funded through the Funza Lushaka Bursary Scheme. NO PGCE for Foundation and Intermediate Phases

How to Apply for Funza Lushaka Bursary

To access, register, and apply for the Funza Lushaka Bursary the following easy steps should be followed:

  1. Go to e-Gov Portal at eservices.gov.za
  2. Access the e-Services Menu
  3. Tap on Education
  4. Select Funza Lushaka Bursary Scheme
  5. Register by providing personal information
  6. Login to the system using the username and password created when registering
  7. Enter the OTP received on the preferred channel
  8. Accept the Terms and Conditions
  9. Navigate to the dashboard menu
  10. Tap on the 2025 application button
  11. Follow the steps to complete the required field with your information
  12. Accept the declaration to confirm the information captured
  13. Review the Summary of the Application and Submit
