Who Can Appeal?
Students who have been assessed as unsuccessful, and who may appeal, will automatically have access to appeal.
New applicants are permitted to appeal if rejected on:
- Insufficient information provided
- Financial ineligibility
- Academic ineligibility
GAP year students – must re-apply for NSFAS Funding
Continuing Students are permitted to appeal if rejected based on:
- Financial ineligibility
- Academic ineligibility
Students are not permitted to appeal if they have reached N+2 (or N+3 in the case of a student living with a disability)
Who Should Not Appeal?
Students are not permitted to appeal if:
- They are registered for a qualification that NSFAS does not fund.
- The detail of the appeal indicates that the student is disclosing different parental or legal guardian information than disclosed in the application or if the student is now indicating that s/he is independent which is different from the application
- They have reached N+2 (or N+3 in the case of a student living with a disability)
- The student is a gap year student who NSFAS previously declined to provide financial aid to due to not meeting the academic eligibility criteria
- The Institution has not submitted their registration record or submitted an incorrect registration record to NSFS – such queries must be directed to the Institution

Tip 1
Question: I need to know my application results as I want to register, what should I do?
Answer: Login to your myNSFAS account via www.nsfas.org.za to check your results. NSFAS student portal is continuously updated, students are encouraged to visit the portal daily to check their results.
Please try submitting your appeal from a laptop or a PC instead of a cell phone.
Tip 2
Question: My Status was unsuccessful and I have 30 days to Appeal, yet I can’t access the Appeal functionality, what should I do, and will my Appeal period be extended?
Answer: Only students who have unsuccessful status due to Financial Ineligibility, Academic Eligibility Criteria (pass/fail) and the N+ rule (if they are still within N+2) may submit an appeal. New applicants who have provided insufficient documents or information may also appeal.

Question: When is the closing date for Appeals?
Answer: A student must appeal within 30 days of receiving an unsuccessful funding status

Question: My Application was unsuccessful, yet there is no Appeal tab available on the myNSFAS account, what should I do?
Answer: If the Appeal tab is not visible it means that a student cannot appeal the funding decision.
Tip 5
Question: I would like to appeal but I’m required to submit a Non-SASSA declaration form and my parents passed away, I have no guardian and I’m financially independent.
Answer: Please note that you won’t be able to appeal as your application has not been rejected if it requires missing documents.
Tip 6
Question: If my parent, guardian, or spouse is a taxi driver/domestic worker/informal trader, what proof of income should I upload?
Answer: Applicant/students must submit parental details correctly, especially their ID numbers, names and surnames, copies of IDs of parent(s)/ legal guardian. NSFAS will verify their income against third party data sources (Letter from employer/taxi association/3 months bank statement)

Question: I applied last year, and I was not approved for funding. Can I apply for 2022?
Answer: Yes, if you applied for NSFAS in 2021 or prior years and your application was not approved but you still need funding for 2022, you may apply again if you meet the funding criteria.
Tip 8
Question: I have loaded my ID number, name, and surname, but I cannot continue with my application.
Answer: The system validates all information as received from the Department of Home Affairs. Ensure that you type in your ID number, name/s, and surname exactly as they appear on your ID document or birth certificate.
