WAEC Announces Release of 2024 BECE Provisional Results

Accra, Ghana – October 19, 2024

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the provisional results for candidates who sat for the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), for both school and private candidates. This announcement follows the conclusion of investigations into numerous cases of examination malpractice, leading to the cancellation and withholding of several results.

Provisional Results and Candidate Statistics

According to WAEC, a total of 569,236 candidates, consisting of 282,703 males and 286,533 females, from 19,505 schools across Ghana participated in the 2024 BECE for school candidates. This figure includes candidates with special needs, such as those with visual and hearing impairments, and others who require special accommodations.

Key statistics for the school examination include:

  • 59 candidates with visual impairment
  • 263 candidates with hearing impairment
  • 161 candidates with other test accommodation needs
  • 3,845 candidates were absent from the exam

For the BECE for Private Candidates, a total of 1,390 candidates participated, with 57 being absent. The private exam was conducted across 15 centers, mostly in regional capitals, and included 750 males and 640 females.

Malpractice Investigations and Actions

Following the 35th meeting of the Final Awards and Examiners’ Appointment Committee, held on October 16, 2024, WAEC reported the following measures taken due to detected irregularities:

  • Subject Results of 377 school candidates and 3 private candidates were canceled for bringing unauthorized materials into the examination hall or colluding with other candidates.
  • The results of 41 school candidates and 1 private candidate were canceled.
  • The Results of 33 school candidates and 3 private candidates were withheld pending further investigations.

In addition, results from candidates in 149 schools have been withheld for further scrutiny, with the possibility of either cancellation or release depending on the outcome of investigations.

WAEC has warned all stakeholders, cautioning them to avoid individuals or groups promising to upgrade results for a fee. The Council assures candidates and the public that BECE results are secure and can be authenticated.

Release and Access to Results

WAEC will dispatch the results for school candidates to their respective schools through the Metropolitan/Municipal/District Directors of Education. Private candidates can access their BECE results online.
