Migration to Rutgers Canvas
The Rutgers State University of New Jersey has migrated all Online Learning Management systems (LMS) such as Moodle, Sakai, and Blackboard to Canvas. Hence, Rutgers Moodle, Sakai, and Blackboard Learn are all known as Rutgers Canvas. Rutgers instructors have migrated all course content to Rutgers Canvas.
How to Access Rutgers Canvas
This Canvas Quick Guide is for students who want to learn how to use canvas. The purpose of this guide is to help students quickly familiarize themselves with Rutgers Canvas Portal.
How to Login Rutgers Canvas Portal
Here are the 2 simple steps on how to login with the Rutgers NetID or Email Address are shown below:
NetID Login
- Navigate to canvas.rutgers.edu
- Tap on the NetID Login button located at the top of the page
- Enter your NetID and Password
- Tap on Login Button

Email Login
Step 1: Set up your password
If you already know your password, skip to Step 2
- Navigate to the Canvas Email Login Page
- Tap on Forgot password?
- Enter your email address and click the Request Password button
- Return to your email account and sign in
- Open the email Forgot Password: Canvas (The sender is [email protected])
- Tap on Click here to set a new password link.
- After you have changed your password, you will be brought back to the Canvas Login Page
Step 2: Log into Canvas
- Navigate to canvas.rutgers.edu
- Enter your Email for the Login ID and the Password from Step 1
- When you log in, you will see your Canvas Dashboard
How to Submit Assignment
You can submit online assignments in Canvas using several submission types. Instructors can choose what kind of online submissions they want you to use. You may also have the option to resubmit assignments if your instructor allows.
- Access your Canvas Dashboard
- In Course Navigation, Tap Assignment
- Tap the name of an assignment to view
- To submit an assignment, Tap the Start Assignment button
- Select Submission Type
- To submit an annotated document, Tap the Student Annotation tab
NB: Group assignments do not support the student annotation submission type.
- Select the File Upload tab
- Tap Submit Assignment
- View Submission
Your instructor will decide what kinds of submissions are appropriate for each Assignment. There are four submission types: upload a file, submit a text entry, enter a website URL, or submit media. You can only select one submission type per submission.
NB: all file types may be available for your Assignment, depending on the assignment submission type set by your instructor.
