Ways to Register for NHIF Account
Have you registered for NHIF? Here’s what to do:
- Use the NHIF (USSD) Shortcode
- Access NHIF Web Portal
- Visit the Nearest NHIF Branch
- Download My NHIF App via App Store (iPhone users) or Google Play (Android users)
NHIF Self-Member Registration
The following are the requirements.
- National ID Number
- Date of Birth
- Mobile Phone Number
- Employer’s NHIF Code if Employed
- Your County
- Nearest NHIF Office
How to Access the NHIF Self-Care Portal
Use the NHIF Self-care Portal to access NHIF services. Service you will access includes, choice/change of facility, view contributions, pay arrears, and much more.
- Go to NHIF Website
- Move to the Navigation tab
- Select “Self Care” under Get Help Online or Download Registration Forms

How to Login NHIF Self-Care Portal
Follow these simple steps to log into the NHIF hospital account or open a new online.
- Access the NHIF Self-Registration Portal
- Tap on Register
- Enter your ID Number OR Not Registered?
- Input your National ID and Year of Birth
- Tap the Continue button to complete the registration
How to Open NHIF Account Using Mobile Phone Shortcode
The NHIF USSD allows you to access various NHIF self-care services. For new members, you can dial *155# on any phone toll-free and register as an NHIF member.
- Dial *155#
- Select option 1 – Registration
- Provide all required details
- Make payment
- Submit to be a member
After registration, you will get an NHIF member number by SMS. You will now be able to access NHIF self-care services which include Payment of Monthly contributions, Payment of Penalties, and Arrears.
You will also be able to select a hospital(s) of your choice for the main member and the dependants. At any time you can change the selected hospital for each member.
How to Pay NHIF via Mobile Money
You can Pay Monthly Contributions, penalties, and Arrears via USSD and Mobile App
- Login to via USSD/Mobile App
- Tap ‘Payment’
- Select Type of Payment
- Enter the Amount to Pay
- Enter Mobile Phone to Pay from
- Await the MPESA PIN Prompt on paying the Mobile phone
How to Change NHIF Chosen Hospital
You can change the chosen hospital for Principal Member and Dependants. To Change a Hospital under supa cover, follow these steps
- Log in to Web/Mobile App or via USSD
- Tap ‘Change Facility’
- Select Member/Dependant
- Select County
- Choose a Hospital in the selected County
- Submit to Save Change of Hospital
How to Choose NHIF Hospital
You can choose the hospital of choice for Principal Member and Dependants. To select a hospital under supa cover, follow these steps
- Log in to Web/Mobile App or via USSD
- Tap ‘Choose Facility’
- Select Member/Dependant
- Select County
- Choose a Hospital in the selected County
- Submit to Save Choice of Hospital
How to Check the NHIF Statement Status
Here’s how to check the NHIF status of your card or get your NHIF details:
- Dialing *155#
- Sending a text message with the format [ID {space} Your ID Number] e.g. (ID 12345678) to 1550
- using the ‘My NHIF’ App which can be downloaded from Google Play or App Store or the NHIF online Selfcare platform.
