The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) has announced the official approval of The Beacon of Light as the new prescribed literature text for Junior High Schools (JHS) nationwide. Authored by Joshlyn Yayra Diabo, Adam Ankrah, Bryte Okrah, and Lucas Zanyoh, the book is set to replace Cock Crow, which has been in use for over 15 years.

Accompanying the main text is The Beacon of Light Commentary, written by Victoria Stevens, Dr. Jemima Larteley Mensah, and Very Rev. Ebo Ephraim. The commentary provides a detailed analysis of the book’s content, offering deeper insights to aid both teachers and students in understanding the material.
Designed to foster critical thinking, problem-solving, literacy, and moral values among young learners, The Beacon of Light aims to complement the core instructional materials used in classrooms. The book is expected to enrich the teaching and learning experience, aligning with the goals of the Standard-based Curriculum.
The decision to replace Cock Crow comes after years of repetitive test items and outdated content, which no longer meet the demands of the current curriculum. NaCCA, in collaboration with the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) and the Ghana Education Service (GES), expressed confidence that The Beacon of Light will significantly enhance the quality of education and better prepare students for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Starting with the 2027 BECE, The Beacon of Light will be included in the English Language Curriculum and will be examined. Students currently in JHS 1 (2023/2024 academic year) and their teachers are advised to take note of this change and begin preparations accordingly.
NaCCA has called on all stakeholders, including parents and guardians, to support learners in accessing copies of the book. The introduction of The Beacon of Light marks a significant step forward in the ongoing efforts to improve educational standards and outcomes for Junior High School students across Ghana.
For further information, stakeholders are encouraged to contact NaCCA or their respective educational institutions.
