About the National Hospital Insurance Fund
The National Hospital Insurance Fund commonly known as Afya Yetu Bima Yetu is a State Parastatal in Kenya that was established in 1966 as a department under the Ministry of Health. Its purpose was to accommodate the changing healthcare needs of the Kenyan population, employment, and restructuring in the health sector.

How to Access National Hospital Insurance Fund Portal
Follow these simple steps to access and login to the National Hospital Insurance Fund Portal.
- Go to NHIF Website
- Scroll down the page
- Select “Register” under Get Help Online or Download Registration Forms
- Register as: Employer, Employee or Self Employed
- Fill in the form with your details
- Click to confirm
How to Self-Register via NHIF Portal
Let’s get started:
- Access the NHIF Online Registration Portal
- Tap on Self Employed on the Menu
- Enter your National ID/Passport/Alien ID
- Provide a Valid ID, the System will allow you to continue
- Fill in all form fields
- Attach a Scanned Copy of Your ID/Passport/Alien ID
- Attach Passport Photo
- If married, attach Your Marriage Certificate
- Click Save. If you filled in all fields, the application will be submitted
- The system will notify you of the Application Status
- The system will also send a Notification SMS to the Contributor’s Mobile Number
How to Register Your Spouse
- Access Online Portal
- Tap on the Spouse Registration on the Menu
- Enter your National ID (Contributor ID)
- Enter Your Spouse’s National ID
- Fill in all form fields
- Attach a Scanned Copy of Your Spouse’s Passport Photo
- If married, attach Your Marriage Certificate
- Click Save. If you filled in all fields, the form will be submitted
- The system will notify you of the Submission Status
- The system will also send a Notification SMS to the Contributor’s Mobile Number
NHIF Registration as a Dependant
- Access the Online Registration Portal
- Tap on Dependant Registration on the Menu
- Enter your National ID (Contributor ID)
- Fill in all form fields
- Attach a Scanned Copy of Your Dependant’s Passport Photo
- Attach a Scanned Copy of Your Dependant’s Birth Certificate
- Click Save. If you filled in all fields, the form will be submitted
- The system will notify you of the Submission Status
- The system will also send a Notification SMS to the Contributor’s Mobile Number
How to Pay via MPESA
To pay via your mobile phone (enabled with Mpesa service) follow these simple steps:
- Select the Pay Bill option
- Enter Business No. Type in 200222
- Enter the contributor’s National Identity Number as the account number
- Enter the amount you wish to contribute (see Mpesa charges)
- Enter your Mpesa Pin
- Confirm all details are correct then press OK
- You will receive a confirmation SMS from Mpesa immediately
