In Ghana, there are over forty-six (46) colleges of Education distributed among all the 16 regions across the country. The Colleges of Education was established under Colleges of Education ACT, 2012. It aimed to upgrade teacher training colleges to tertiary institutions (Colleges of Education) and to provide for related matters.
Therefore, a colleges of education established under this Act is a public institution, hence, shall be affiliated to a reputable University by law. Besides, the purpose was to train teachers to acquired the necessary skills and academic competencies for teaching in pre-tertiary institutions and non-formal education institutions. Also, to equip teachers for effective teaching of Mathematics, Science, ICT among other subjects relevant the society.
Why now the University Colleges of Education
In October 2018, after careful consultation of all principals of Colleges of Education with the ministry of education and other stakeholders, all colleges of Education have been upgraded to University Colleges of Education and have been affiliated to higher learning institutions (Universities) in the country. Hence, all training colleges of Education in Ghana know offered degree programmes.
