How to stop unknown MTN, Vodafone and AirtelTigo subscriptions

The Electronic Transactions Act, 2008 Act 772 states:

  1. Except in the case of a notice sent by an electronic communications provider to a customer about the service, a person shall not send unsolicited electronic communications to a consumer without obtaining the prior consent of the consumer.
  2. A person who sends electronic commercial communication to a consumer shall provide the consumer (a) with the option to cancel the subscription to the mailing list of that person, and (b) with the identifying particulars of the source from which that person obtained the consumer’s personal information at the request of the consumer.
  3. An agreement shall not be deemed to have been concluded where a consumer fails to respond to unsolicited communication, and the consumer is entitled to recover the costs associated with the cancellation of unsolicited communication.
  4. A person who contravenes subsection (1) commits an offense and is liable on summary conviction to a fine of not more than five thousand penalty units or a term of imprisonment of not more than ten years or both.
  5. A person who sends unsolicited commercial communications to another person or who continues to send unsolicited commercial communications after the cancellation of the subscription commits an offense and is liable on summary conviction to a fine of not more than five thousand penalty units or a term of imprisonment of not more than ten years or both.

How to stop the subscriptions

Follow the procedures below to stop unknown subscriptions from MTN, Vodafone, and AirtelTigo.

MTN

  1. Dial *175# and Send
  2. Select option 1 My Subscriptions
  3. You will see the list of subscriptions and an option which says Unsubscribe All
  4. Select all if you want to Unsubscribe
  5. Otherwise you select the one you want to unsubscribe from and follow the prompts. Then you report the process for each of them.

AirtelTigo

  1. Dial *100# and Send
  2. Select 4 Content Manager
  3. Select Deactivate Subscriptions
  4. Here are your hidden subscriptions
  5. Select the one you want to deactivate
  6. Follow the prompts

Vodafone

  1. Dial *463#
  2. Select 1 My Subscriptions
  3. Select 1 View Subscriptions
  4. The list of your subscriptions will pop-up
  5. Select 1 and Send
  6. Select 2 to Unsubscribe
  7. Follow the prompts
