The Management of the Ghana Education Service – GES with the directives from the Minister of Education has released a new academic calendar. The Service has now reverted the calendar of public schools from the 2 -Term (semester) system to the 3 –Term (trimester) system.
It may be recalled that the Ministerial Committee on School Calendar issued a calendar for the current academic year indicating that Kindergarten (KG) to Junior High School (JHS) was to be based on the Semester System.
Following the directives to commence the Semester system, the Ministry has received representation from a section of the public and key educational stakeholders to re-instate the Trimester system.
Therefore, after GES announced the reopening of schools across the country, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana (CCT-GH) and the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) – forming the Unions in Education with support from Eduwatch and AFFED kicked against the move citing no knowledge about the decision.
After further consultation on the issue, the Honourable Minister for Education has directed that the calendar for Kindergarten to Junior High School for the current academic year should revert to the Trimester system.
