How to Check Your UIF Claim Status Online
When you submit a claim for Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) benefits and wait for a decision, you can check the status online.

UIF Unemployment Benefits

Qualifying Conditions
- Application to be submitted within 12 months of termination of service.
- The benefit is payable from the date after the termination of service.
- A benefit is payable if an employer terminates the services of the contributor, or the contract of service has expired.
- Benefits are not payable in case of resignation unless a case of constructive dismissal is proven.
- A claimant is to register as a work-seeker with the Department of Employment and Labour.
- Subject to credits, benefits can be paid for a maximum of 365.
- Contributors who lose income as a result of reduced working times can claim unemployment benefits.
Requirements
- 13-digit barcoded/Smart card RSA ID, passport or asylum seekers permit.
- Banking details UI-2.8. 19 form.
- Salary Schedule.
- Registration as work-seeker.
- Periodic continuation form (UI 6A) to be submitted on monthly basis.
In the case of a voluntary severance package or early retirement, a UI 2.11 form is required.
Maternity Benefits Qualifying Conditions

- The application should be made before the birth of a child or within twelve months of the birth of the child.
- The contributor must be receiving less than the normal remuneration whilst on maternity leave.
- Benefits are payable at a flat rate of 66% to a female contributor, for confinement or the period after the birth of a child.
- Maternity benefits will be paid for a maximum of 121 days.
- In an event of a miscarriage or a stillbirth, benefits are paid for a maximum period of 121 days.
- A contributor must have been employed for at least 13 weeks before the date of application for maternity benefits.

- Declaration in respect of remuneration received whilst on maternity leave.
- A completed UI 2.7 form.

- A Follow-up UI-4 form will be issued.

Qualifying Conditions
In terms of Section 12(1) b of the Unemployment Insurance Amendment Act 10 of 2016 a contributor employed in any sector, other than domestic that loses his or her income due to reduced working time, despite still being employed, is entitled to benefits.
If the contributor’s total income falls below the benefits level which the contributor would have received, if he or she had become wholly unemployed, he will qualify for benefits and the claim will be approved. The applicant’s benefits are subject to having enough credits (Top will apply).

Dependants Benefits
Read below the qualifying conditions and requirements of the UIF Dependent Benefits.
Qualifying Conditions
- The surviving spouse/life partner must apply for benefits within 18 months from the date of death of the contributor.
- A dependant child can apply for benefits if the surviving spouse(s)/life partner has not applied within 18 months of the contributor’s death.
- If the surviving spouse did not apply within the prescribed period, the guardian in respect of child/ children under the age of 18 as well as child/children between 21 and 25, if still, a learner can also apply.
- Any child of the deceased who is between the ages of 21 and 25 at the date of death of the contributor may also qualify for benefits. The child has to be a learner/student and must have been wholly dependent on the deceased contributor.
- Claims are paid to a maximum of 365 credits days which is accrued for the period workers work and contribute. Maximum credits of 365 are paid once every 4 years.
- Contributors will be allowed to nominate their beneficiaries in case of death benefits, provided there is no surviving spouse/ life partner or children.
Requirements

- Children: in the case of a guardian, proof of guardianship is required, and if applicable a letter confirming that a minor is still in school and a birth certificate will be required.
- Marriage certificate.
- Death certificate of the deceased contributor: (The application will not be considered with a foreign death certificate. Only a South African burial order issued by the Department of Home Affairs will be accepted).
- Marriage certificate or Lobola letter or an affidavit in case of life partner.
- Birth certificate/s of dependant/s.
- Proof of schooling (applies to all dependants who are between the ages of 21 and 25)
