The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) is alerting recent Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) graduates, their families, and friends to a rise in fraudulent schemes targeting them. Fraudsters are impersonating officials from educational bodies, specifically the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), to deceive students into believing they can upgrade their BECE results or influence their school placements for a fee. Here’s a breakdown of the methods used and how to stay safe:
Modus Operandi of the Fraud Scheme
- Impersonation of Officials: Fraudsters create fake profiles on social media, particularly posing as WAEC representatives. They use convincing narratives to appear credible.
- WhatsApp Groups: These actors often set up WhatsApp groups aimed at recent JHS graduates, where they engage members directly, claiming insider access to exam results and school placement systems.
- Payment Demands: After gaining the victim’s trust, the fraudsters request payment to “upgrade” results or adjust placements. Once the payment is made, the fraudsters cease communication.
CSA Recommendations to Avoid Falling Victim
- Results and Placements Are Final: BECE results and placements are official and cannot be altered by any third party. No individual or group can legitimately alter these results or influence placements.
- Financial and Privacy Risks: Engaging with these scammers can lead to financial loss and risks exposing personal information, which may lead to identity theft and further fraudulent activity.
- Verify Through Official Channels: Always verify your BECE results via the official WAEC portal or through recognized educational institutions. Avoid trusting third-party individuals or groups offering “modification” services.
